Some fine examples are the Sterling Audio ST51, Alctron HST11a, Apex 460, MXL 2006, CAD GXL2200. Also ebay is your friend! And remember, some of the best donor bodies are sitting unused in your studio right now! Some cool spots for donor bodies:

Capsule:
A little blood has to be drawn for a good capsule, but that is the most important part in your microphone. More expensive doesn’t mean better. Better means better. That being said better is usually more expensive:

What transformer you get depends on the tube being used, but there is a lot of wiggle room and great opportunity for tone creation with output iron in the mix:

Tube:
In a properly designed microphone a good tube will last a lifetime. What tube you use depends on what you can get, what you may have or what you want. Good tubes for microphones include 5840W, 6072, 12AY7, 12AV7, EF95, 6J4P etc. Ebay can be your friend when finding a tube, but be careful! It is getting harder and harder to find low noise, low microphonic tubes suited for microphone use.

I love a good clone microphone but there are a lot of elements in classic designs that can be borrowed, mixed and matched.
